Below is a statement from Eltham MP Clive Efford following the announcement of the death of his constituent Lance Corporal Jake Alderton, 20 Field Squadron, 36 Engineer Regiment, who died whilst on active service in southern Afghanistan Friday 9 November 2007.
“I was extremely sad to hear of the death of Jake Alderton in a tragic accident while he was serving in Afghanistan.
I know Jake’s parents and have been to visit the family. It is always very sad when the death of one of our soldiers is announced in parliament, but it is even more so when the people involved are known to you. The tributes to Jake from his commanding officers show that he was a dedicated and highly regarded member of their team. From the conversation I had with Jake’s mum, it was clear that he was fully aware of the importance of the job he was doing. He was a credit to his family, his regiment and his country.”
Clive paid tribute to Lance Corporal Alderton at Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons on Wednesday 14 November 2007.
