Back the Bill

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Government prevented my bill moving forward. However, I will continue to fight to save our NHS. If you would like to register your support for a properly funded NHS and to keep updated on the campaign, please enter your details below.

I am delighted that my Bill to halt the privatisation of our health service passed its second reading in Parliament by 241 to 18. It is astonishing that the Tories could only muster a handful of MPs to support their disastrous 2012 Act which forces competition in the NHS.

The Labour Party created the NHS and my Bill will protect it from competition from private companies, to exempt it from any Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement and to ensure that we prioritise patients not profit.

But our fight isn't over.  I have written to William Hague to demand that the Government take the Bill straight to Committee and do not use delay tactics to try to stall its passage through Parliament.

We have seen the impact that the Government’s privatisation agenda has had on our NHS – longer waiting times, fewer frontline staff and millions being spent on accountants and lawyers rather than patients - and the Liberal Democrats have gone along with it.

It is simple; we will not stand for this and my Bill just signals the start. A Labour Government would repeal the toxic Health and Social Care Act and ensure that we put patients back where they belong – at the heart of our NHS.

We still need your help to keep the pressure on the Government.  Please register your support for Clive's demands that the Government respect the will of Parliament and not delay its passage through Parliament.

Get rid of the useless layers of top management – money saved should go toward community care; bring back ward sisters and pay nurses a decent wage. Perhaps then they would take more pride in their work and care for patients as they used to…once upon a time. Good luck!

Don’t let the government do the same to the NHS as they did to the Post Office

I’ve never voted Labour in my life, and have little confidence in Ed Millband as a potential Prime Minister. But the damage that 5 more years of the Tories will do to this country, its people and our NHS terrifies me, so I’ll be voting for Clive Efford next May.
