Back the Bill

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Government prevented my bill moving forward. However, I will continue to fight to save our NHS. If you would like to register your support for a properly funded NHS and to keep updated on the campaign, please enter your details below.

I am delighted that my Bill to halt the privatisation of our health service passed its second reading in Parliament by 241 to 18. It is astonishing that the Tories could only muster a handful of MPs to support their disastrous 2012 Act which forces competition in the NHS.

The Labour Party created the NHS and my Bill will protect it from competition from private companies, to exempt it from any Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement and to ensure that we prioritise patients not profit.

But our fight isn't over.  I have written to William Hague to demand that the Government take the Bill straight to Committee and do not use delay tactics to try to stall its passage through Parliament.

We have seen the impact that the Government’s privatisation agenda has had on our NHS – longer waiting times, fewer frontline staff and millions being spent on accountants and lawyers rather than patients - and the Liberal Democrats have gone along with it.

It is simple; we will not stand for this and my Bill just signals the start. A Labour Government would repeal the toxic Health and Social Care Act and ensure that we put patients back where they belong – at the heart of our NHS.

We still need your help to keep the pressure on the Government.  Please register your support for Clive's demands that the Government respect the will of Parliament and not delay its passage through Parliament.

No one wants the NHS to self-implode, it’s more important than Thatcher’s Memorial or Trident/Nuclear Weapons, so why do we have the money for those, but not for the one national institution we all use/need/rely on? Why do I have to travel miles to find my nearest A&E? Why are the tories so closely connected to the businesses that they want to outsource the NHS work to, surely that’s a conflict of interest? Why do we subsidize training/education for nurses/doctors via our taxes, but then give the good ones no choice but to join a privatized company because the NHS pays so badly (due to underfunding) – we train them to be the best, so why can’t we keep the best after such investment – are we subsidizing private businesses with our tax money?

I’m very concerned about this governments plans for the NHS.

As a vocational adviser for a charity in north London I support young people with mental health issues to find work and training.

Many of my clients have severe and enduring mental health issues and have to wait months to access talking therapies and other necessary support.

I dread the impact on my client group of the potential privatisation of already scare and underfunded resources.

Crucial efforts, especially as the coalition has now admitted that the disastrous NHS reforms were their biggest mistake in power (BMJ, 24 October 2014)
