Back the Bill

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Government prevented my bill moving forward. However, I will continue to fight to save our NHS. If you would like to register your support for a properly funded NHS and to keep updated on the campaign, please enter your details below.

I am delighted that my Bill to halt the privatisation of our health service passed its second reading in Parliament by 241 to 18. It is astonishing that the Tories could only muster a handful of MPs to support their disastrous 2012 Act which forces competition in the NHS.

The Labour Party created the NHS and my Bill will protect it from competition from private companies, to exempt it from any Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement and to ensure that we prioritise patients not profit.

But our fight isn't over.  I have written to William Hague to demand that the Government take the Bill straight to Committee and do not use delay tactics to try to stall its passage through Parliament.

We have seen the impact that the Government’s privatisation agenda has had on our NHS – longer waiting times, fewer frontline staff and millions being spent on accountants and lawyers rather than patients - and the Liberal Democrats have gone along with it.

It is simple; we will not stand for this and my Bill just signals the start. A Labour Government would repeal the toxic Health and Social Care Act and ensure that we put patients back where they belong – at the heart of our NHS.

We still need your help to keep the pressure on the Government.  Please register your support for Clive's demands that the Government respect the will of Parliament and not delay its passage through Parliament.

I fully support full scrutiny of any plans to privatise any parts of the NHS.

Having worked in the NHS for more than 40 years it has been heartbreaking to see its insidious privatisation. In my view, this has done nothing to improve patient care but has diverted finances from the provision of medical services to the pockets of shareholders. I would certainly vote for a government which had the courage to take the NHS back from the private sector, abandon the costly “internal market” and withdraw from PPI/PPP agreements.

Great that Clive Efford is doing this, although I do wonder how we get the NHS out of debt that they seem to be in and become a world leader in medicine. I often wonder why so people from the UK travel to countries with lower GDP, yet those countries have better and more advanced healthcare than the UK. Government need to get their priorities straight when it comes to spending the people’s money. I don’t want nuclear weapons, but I do want decent healthcare!! Sometimes I feel like working cash in hand and never pay any tax again until the government start truly listening to the people who pay them!
