Clive Efford - A Strong Voice for Eltham and Plumstead

sadiq_and_clive.jpgChris Grayling, the Conservative minister for transport, has called for the train services from Eltham to Charing Cross and Victoria to be cut.  Under his Department's proposals trains on the Bexleyheath line will only run to Cannon Street.

They claim that  running to trains to several destinations "introduces operational complexity, requiring trains to cross complex and busy junctions. This is a major contributor to delays, and makes it much harder to recover the service when things go wrong.”  The Government's answer to this problem is simple: cut the services, ignoring the terrible impact this will have on local commuters and the whole community.  This unacceptable.

If this change goes ahead does this mean that it pushes a train load of commuters onto the platforms of Blackheath or Lewisham to try and get on already overcrowded trains to Charing Cross or Victoria?

The Victoria and charing cross trains are crucial to many members of the public who commute daily to work/college. The cuts will cause a lot of congestion at stations across the line causing delays and problems to many journeys.

An entire community is able to commute due to this comprehensive service to central London – precisely why we, and thousands of others, moved here!

To have a Zone 4 commuter hub with extraordinarily limited access to central London is a ridiculous proposal – aren’t we moving towards a more connected city?….Annexing a big commuter area of south East London by limiting the train service doesn’t feel connected.

In addition, the borough of Greenwich has just spent a lot of funds trying to regenerate Eltham making it a better place to live. Little point if a lot of residents move away because they can’t get to work.

I appreciate the running of a train network involves complexity. That is why a competent organisation is required to run it. One only needs to look at the overcrowding statistics to see how busy the Charing X and Victoria routes are – which, presumably, someone did when the decision to implement twelve carriage trains was put into place. If this proposal is being seriously considered by the government it is alarming how thoroughly out of touch they are with the services they run – and the people who use them.

This is a ridiculous proposal. Eltham is a really busy station, we need more trains not less.

The train services needs to be improved not decreased! We were promised the DLR and that has died a death. We need better transport links please.

Please re-consider these proposals..

Reduce the service if necessary, don’t cut them totally..

Outrageous, we were promised a better service af ter three years of hell rebuilding London Bridge and now we have this suggestion of cutting Victoria trains and only trains going to one terminus.I presume the same will be for the service from Mottingham although I cannot find out anything about the Sidcup line on line. The feeling from the people of Eltham is that we will not stand for these cuts and will do everything in our powers to stop this.

I am particularly concerned about my daughter being able to travel to school between Mottingham and North Dulwich – she normally changes at Lewisham and then Peckham Rye. It takes much longer and is much more expensive to travel via London Bridge.

To cut not one but two of our services create chaos especially for those who commute to work. Those busy periods will be unbearable, unusable even as people will be forced onto the same service. I doubt very much that the cuts will be replaced by a more frequent service to Cannon Street!

Any plans by Southeastern to reduce services on any of its lines must be opposed. The franchise has consistently let its customers down, and immediately be taken back into public ownership!

Transport links in Eltham are already bad. We need our train services into London for work, social and leisure and hospital appointments etc.

The whole proposal shows a total lack of knowledge and understanding of how much the south east of London relies on the ‘overground’ train, lacking as we do any underground and DLR much beyond the line of the river. The suggestion that we change trains (most likely no seats left in the final change, certainly no disabled access at one of the crucial change stations) for access to central London is risible.

We deserve a train service which meets the demands of the local community. This means no change to current destinations of trains to London
