Clive Efford - A Strong Voice for Eltham and Plumstead

sadiq_and_clive.jpgChris Grayling, the Conservative minister for transport, has called for the train services from Eltham to Charing Cross and Victoria to be cut.  Under his Department's proposals trains on the Bexleyheath line will only run to Cannon Street.

They claim that  running to trains to several destinations "introduces operational complexity, requiring trains to cross complex and busy junctions. This is a major contributor to delays, and makes it much harder to recover the service when things go wrong.”  The Government's answer to this problem is simple: cut the services, ignoring the terrible impact this will have on local commuters and the whole community.  This unacceptable.

The proposal shows a complete lack of understanding that commuters from the SE quadrant of the city rely totally on rail travel

to deliver them close to their work place without the need for supplementary tube journeys upon arrival at their chosen terminus. Cannon Street is poorly connected to useful major tube lines which would force CX and VIC passengers to change at London Bridge. Imagine the increased congestion!

Government has to understand that all Londoners want to spend as little time commuting as possible. Any proposal that increases journey times is completely unacceptable

Current 6 trains per hour service to 3 central stations meets the needs of Kidbrooke residents. Focussing services on only Cannon Street will cause major problems for countless travellers; extra travel costs, extra time, extra demands on district / cicrle lines and cause real problems for people with disabilities. Cannon St is an inadequate terminus compared with Victoria and Charing Cross without a taxi rank and only one tube line. The lack of any plans for any DLR or tube services beyond Lewisham in Eltham / Bexleyheath areas and poor access to East London by public transport at a time when population is rising fast means that we can;t afford this retrograde plan

Trains to/from Charing Cross via the Bexleyheath line are among the busiest in London. We desperately need more capacity and more frequent services on this line, not cuts! Cuts will be disastrous for commuters who have to travel into/out of London every day for work and for the local economy. Victoria services are also extremely busy and cuts to these would also be detrimental for commuters and the local economy.
