Clive Efford - A Strong Voice for Eltham and Plumstead

sadiq_and_clive.jpgChris Grayling, the Conservative minister for transport, has called for the train services from Eltham to Charing Cross and Victoria to be cut.  Under his Department's proposals trains on the Bexleyheath line will only run to Cannon Street.

They claim that  running to trains to several destinations "introduces operational complexity, requiring trains to cross complex and busy junctions. This is a major contributor to delays, and makes it much harder to recover the service when things go wrong.”  The Government's answer to this problem is simple: cut the services, ignoring the terrible impact this will have on local commuters and the whole community.  This unacceptable.

Words can’t express how stupid I think this idea is .

Taking the Bexleyheath line away from Charing Cross would have a devasting effect on my ability to get to and from work and on all those commuters that pack the trains to standing room only, every day. Additional costs as well. This is an outrageous suggestion/

I am a season ticket holder and use the service daily from Eltham to all the stations at different times of the week. I thought privatisation was supposed to increase customer choice not reduce it. A terrible idea from a terrible Government.

The flexibility of being able to travel to all of the rail terminals served from the south east far out ways any inconvenience that may occur waiting at signals

The proposed cuts of service to Victoria and Charing Cross are unacceptable. There are no valid justifications for these cuts. Grayling is trying to sweeten the pot for a new franchisee.

This is one of the most stupid ideas to emanate from the government. It reduces the opportunities for users of the railway. It will increase congestion at Cannon Street and London Bridge, on the District Line and at tube stations. And, it will increase the journey time to get to London.

This proposal smacks of lunacy. It surely is a result of a paper exercise by someone who has a complete misunderstanding of the daily lives of the people in southeast London who are dependent on mainline services to access their workplace and their leisure. This is exacerbated for people like myself who, because of chronic illness, are already limited by energy and by finance. Going direct gives the possibility of glimmers of real life. I am shocked that so little consideration for the real impact of this plan has been given. Just because something works on paper for a beaurocrat does not mean that it works in real terms for real people.

Preposterous suggestion, would never have been proposed by anyone who had ever used this poor service. It’s bad now, surely the Government will not make it worse? “The cost of everything but the value of nothing” comes to mind.
