Following the Government’s decision yesterday to re-open schools as normal in Greenwich, I have written to the Secretary of State Gavin Williamson asking that he urgently reconsiders placing Greenwich in a contingency area.
It is not clear how the criteria for the re-opening of schools has been selected and weighed against neighbouring boroughs who have been advised to keep schools closed, and I am extremely concerned about the prospect of welcoming children back when it is not safe to do so.
I want children to return to school as soon as they are safe and able, and understand the problems caused by ongoing disruptions to a child’s education. But while the evidence suggests this is not yet the case, I will continue to push for greater and safer measures in Eltham and Greenwich.
